COURSE CATEGORY: Operational Deck

DURATION: 1 day

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS
The course intends to ensure the correct and diligent exchange of information between master and pilot (MPX) and integration of the pilot in the bridge team.

COURSE TOPICS
-The course gives emphasis on the proper and diligent Master-Pilot Information Exchange (MPX). Ensure that pilots are fully informed about any limitations of the vessel’s machinery or equipment, e.g. engine power, steering, bitt capacity etc.
-Learn how to make the most of all available resources on the bridge.
-Understand all aspects of the passage plan for the passage under pilotage.
-Officers raise awareness immediately when they note any deviation from the passage plan.
-The need for vigilance on the part of the ships’ officers in monitoring the progress of the vessel with reference to the passage plan.
-Ensure proper communication with the pilot – especially when there are doubts.
-Encourage officers to question a pilot where there is any uncertainty about the situation or the actions intended. Understand the most effective way in which to do this.
-Reinforce the understanding of masters that, with the sole exception of the Panama Canal, the pilot directs the navigation of the ship, with the support of the bridge team. The master remains in command and has the right, and indeed the duty, to intervene if the actions of a pilot endanger the safety of the ship.

COURSE CATEGORY: Operational Deck

DURATION: 2 days

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS
Advance Ships Handling with Simulator course is a refresh syllabus on using a 360 full mission bridge-room simulator.
The trainees who successfully complete this course will have gained experience in handling ships under various conditions. They could also make a more effective contribution to the bridge team during ship maneuvering in normal and emergency situations.
In particular, trainees will gain:
a) familiarization with the use of engines and helm for ship maneuvering
b) understanding of the effects on the behaviour of the ship of wind, current, shallow water, banks and narrow channels and condition of loading
c) greater awareness of the importance of planning a passage or maneuver and the need for an alternative plan
d) greater understanding and awareness of efficient bridge procedures and bridge teamwork during watchkeeping and ship handling; in normal and in emergency situations
e) greater awareness and understanding of a good interactive communication style and benefit of building up a common shared mental model of the planned passage.

The course covers the training recommended in the IMO model course 1.22 (2023 edition). It fulfills the training Specification on Minimum Standard of Competence for Masters and Chief Mates on Ships of 500 Gross Tonnage or more, specified by STCW code B-V/a in table A-II/2 as amended. This regards maneuvering and handling VLCC, SUEZMAX, AFRAMAX & MR & PANAMAX cargo ships in various conditions.
