Explosion proof and safe maintenance

Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform maintenance and inspection tasks in explosive atmospheres (hazardous areas) in a safe, compliant, and efficient manner, ensuring protection of the crew, the vessel, and the marine environment, while maintaining compliance with applicable international regulations.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the concept of explosive atmospheres and identify sources of ignition on ships and offshore installations.
  2. Recognize and correctly handle certified explosion-proof equipment in accordance with ATEX and IECEx standards.
  3. Be familiar with the regulatory framework (SOLAS Ch. II-2, ISM Code, IMO Resolutions, ISO/IEC standards).
  4. Apply safe maintenance procedures for electrical and mechanical systems in hazardous areas.
  5. Record, monitor, and report findings related to the condition of explosion-proof equipment.
  6. Conduct practical exercises in the inspection, maintenance, and verification of explosion-proof installations.
  7. Promote a culture of accident prevention and continuous safety awareness onboard and ashore.
