INTERTANKO’s Executive Committee has requested the Secretariat develop guidelines that Members could use to develop their own company whistle-blowing policy in order to assist in encouraging the proper behavior by all crewmembers.

At the INTERTANKO Executive Committee meeting on 5 February 2013, the Committee discussed the whistle-blowing incidents that had recently occurred in the United States. The Executive Committee was concerned that the whistle-blowing laws in the US were encouraging the wrong behavior by some seafarers. However, the Committee agreed that INTERTANKO should not attempt to change the US whistle-blowing laws and should instead developing guidelines to help Members make their own company policies.

INTERTANKO Member V.Ships had developed their own company whistle-blowing policy and they agreed to share their policy with the Secretariat in order to assist in the development of the INTERTANKO guidelines.
